Addicted Inspirations: Liam from Cancer Bats

This week’s Addicted Inspiration is Canadian punk rockers Cancer Bats’ lead vocalist Liam Cormier. Liam has just launched a head shaving campaign to raise money for cancer research.

While shaving one’s head may be a fairly mundane activity in the punk rock world, Liam’s reasoning is far more philanthropic, which makes him a rock star on a whole nother level. Over the course of Cancer Bats’ UK and European tour, Liam will be accepting donations on behalf of The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation and Research Centre at all the band’s tour stops and live shows. The head shave for cancer fundraising campaign will wrap up on February 22 with the frontman shaving his head at Town Barber in Toronto. Watch Liam’s message about the campaign below:

Combining fundraising with punk rock antics makes Liam pretty inspiration to us. Take a read below and get inspired by Liam along with us.

How did you get involved with the work you currently do?

Over the last 10 years of touring, we’ve had charities that we’ve taken on tours with us and have been on big tours with charities set up at every show. I’ve seen first hand how much good they’ve done and the positive response they have gotten from the music community. I just thought that with a huge tour across the UK and Europe I could probably raise a lot of money if I did something myself and talked about it from stage every night and asked people to help out. So far it’s been going amazingly!

What are some of the successes (big or small) you’ve had?

Having finished the first leg of the tour and we’ve already raised almost 6000£ just from kids at the concerts chucking in a few coins each every night, just goes to show how much of an impact everyone just doing their little bit can help in such a huge way.

Whats piece of advice would you give to someone trying to do what you do, or trying to follow their own dreams?

I think the biggest thing is that every little bit helps, so just in doing a small fund raiser like this on my own, I’ve already raised way more money than I thought I would. So I think to never feel held back by how big or small you think the work you’ll do will be. I think all of it is helpful towards a larger cause and you’ll be surprised with how much of a difference you’ll actually make.

Who inspires you?

The person who inspired me to do the head shave in the first place is my friend Rob Dyer who has dedicated his entire life to his own charity, Skate4Cancer. He’s ridden a skateboard across Canada, The United States, Spain, Australia and all in the name of raising money for Cancer Research and Cancer Awareness. He is truly an amazing individual.

If you could pick one charitable organization to ask our readers to donate to or volunteer with, which would it be?

After doing this head shave charity for the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation I would ask everyone to send donations and to organise a fund raiser of their own for their facility. They are such an incredible organisation and have been so amazing to work with. To find out more and see what an amazing facility they have please visit thepmcf.ca and go to the “events” and see how you can donate and help on your own 🙂

For fans that are interested in donating but are unable to attend a show, donations are also being accepted online HERE.
