Robert Mondavi founded his namesake winery in 1966 with the vision to create world class wines in the Napa Valley. He wanted to prove he could make California wines that would stand in the company of the great wines of the world. Most of all, he wanted to prove that with the right soil and techniques, he could make wine just as well as the French. As early as the late 1960s, the winery helped introduce to California such wine making techniques as the use of cold fermentation, stainless steel tanks, and French oak barrels. Furthermore, he introduced organic techniques and he even teamed up with NASA to map the region. From those humble beginnings in 1966 to the world class winery that it is today, Robert Modavi has always been known for producing some of the finest wines in the world.
This year Robert Mondavi Winery proudly celebrates 50 years of wine making in California. To mark the occasion, we are celebrating our two favourite wines from the Mondavi Family: the Fumé Blanc Reserve and the Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve. Mr. Mondavi always believed that wines should reflect their origins, that they are the product of the soil and the climate. And this two wines prove this fact. Further, it is the combination of time honoured traditions and new techniques that make both of these wines classics in their repertoire. The To Kalon vineyard is the historic vineyard that provides the winery with grapes for its Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve. Moreover it is also the exclusive source of the Fumé Blanc Reserve. Fumé Blanc 2014.
In the late 1960s, Robert Mondavi popularized Fumé Blanc, a name he coined for dry-fermented, barrel-aged Sauvignon Blanc. At the time, Californian Sauvignon Blanc wines were sweet and ordinary. Almost too sweet. But this twist in technique lead to a a dryer, more oaky white. This particular white is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc with a touch of Sémillon. As a result, it is full bodied yet beautifully complex with rich mouthfeel. Perfectly balanced aromas and flavours of zippy citrus (lemon and orange), peach, and honeydew melon with a touch of minerality. As well as some integrated oak notes. Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2016.
Since the winery’s very inception, they have been making this classic red. It continues to be a go-to red for any meal (and quite enjoyable on its own). We always have this bottle stocked in our cabinets at home. This red is a blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc. It features a deep ruby red colour with intense and deep aromatics of strawberry, blackberry, and baking spice. Moreover, it has medium acidity, bold fruit, with a backbone of integrated tannins. Finally, this red is wonderfully elegant, velvety smooth and aromatic. In other words, this red is full bodied and delicious. $35.95 at the LCBO
