Top Picks for Warped Tour 2016

Hello Addicted Magazine Readers! Patrick Walford here with you. Host of Rock The Walls on idobi Howl and idobi Radio, podcast is available at idobi.com and on iTunes, and one of the hosts of idobi Warped Radio this Summer. Ever since attending Warped Tour 2007, it’s been something I circle on my calendar and look forward to every year. The 21st edition of Vans Warped Tour is packed with so many amazing bands, making it extremely difficult to pick just 6 bands for you to check out. If you plan on attending and aren’t familiar with some of the names you see on the line-up, be sure to check their music out.

Seriously. In my opinion, this is one of the strongest Warped Tour Line-ups in years. Here are 6 bands you should check out at this Summer’s Vans Warped Tour:

In my opinion, this is one of the strongest Warped Tour Line-ups in years. Here are 6 bands you should check out at this Summer’s Vans Warped Tour:

Wage War

Hailing from Ocala,Florida, this 5 piece Metalcore band is really what heavy music is all about. Passion, Intensity, Meaningful Lyrics, and an incredible live show. Releasing their debut album Blueprints in November 2015, they have been relentlessly touring with the likes of August Burns Red, Chelsea Grin, Attila, and Ice Nine Kills ever since. Blueprints is back-to-the-basics Metalcore, and I mean that in the best way possible. Whether it’s the bouncy Nu-Metal Vibes of Alive, the melodic perfection of Twenty One, or the heavy hearted story and emotion behind their song Youngblood, Wage War’s set is one you will wish continued twice as long as it is. They’ll have you headbanging all set and passionately shouting back the lyrics to every song. Warped Tour fans, say hello to your new favorite Metalcore band.

Coldrain

Coldrain is truly one of the best kept secrets heading into Warped Tour this Summer. While they are HUGE back in the home of Japan, they are relatively new to Warped Fans and as well to touring North America (Warped will be their 3rd North American Tour, previously going out with Northlane/Volumes in Late 2015 & Silverstein this Spring). Blending Metalcore Breakdowns with Melodic and Anthemic Arena Rock-like Choruses, Coldrain puts on one hell of a live show that can’t be missed. Whether it’s the crushing breakdown at the beginning of their set playing The Revelation to songs off of their latest release Vena, this Japanese band brings unmatched energy to their live performance that will make any first time listener a fan. Do not miss this band!

Veil of Maya

When a band changes Vocalists, it either leaves the band a shell of their former selves, or does the exact opposite and helps them reach places they’ve never been before. Fortunately for VoM it is the latter. Releasing their fifth studio album Matriarch last May with new Vocalist Lukas Maygar at the helm, (in my opinion as a long time fan of the band) the band wrote their best record yet. With a set consisting heavily of material from that album Matriarch with some old favourites sprinkled in, Veil of Maya is at their best and a must-see for any Metal fan attending the tour. Please find me a guitarist who is as entertaining and chaotic as Marc Okubo is while melting faces off. Simply one of the best.

Issues

Blending Metal, Rock, Pop, R&B, Jazz, and Hip Hop, Issues truly has a sound of their own. Fresh off the heels of releasing their Impressive Sophomore Album Headspace, the quintet’s second stint on Warped Tour has been drawing some of the biggest crowds all tour, and rightfully so. Issues is one of those bands that makes you want to dance while at the same time wanting to mosh or start a circle pit. Vocalists Tyler Carter and Michael Bohn are truly the scene’s PB&J Sandwich, the perfect combo without a doubt. Along with Skylar’s groovy Bass lines, A.Js infectious Guitar riffs, and Josh’s drumming, Issues are the full package.

Plus, for all you Pokemon fans out there (which as we’ve all found out with the release of Pokemon GO this past week is A LOT of people) they open their set performing the Pokemon Theme Song, all with a Pokemon Themed Backdrop and Equipment Backline that is a sight in and of itself to be seen.

Yellowcard

The same day YC kicked off their 7th time on Warped Tour, they announced that they were calling it quits for good. Once they wrap up Warped, the band will release their 10th and final record, Yellowcard (self-titled), before embarking on a Fall Farewell Tour all over the world (sorry Toronto, no farewell date up here. Total bummer.). One of the all-time legendary Pop Punk bands of the 2000s, YC plays an awesome set of fan favourites like Ocean Avenue, Way Away, Only One and Five Becomes Four that will make you feel nostalgia back to when you were still in High School all while putting a giant smile on your face. Make sure you go and catch the electricity that is a YC live show this Summer. It might be your last chance ever if they aren’t coming through your town on their farewell tour.

Yellowcard – “With You Around” (in my opinion a VERY underrated song by them, and their Warped set opener!)

Sum 41

Do I really need to explain? A set filled with old favourites and a brand new jam that kicks you right in the teeth, Sum 41 is one of those bands that made you so excited to go to Warped Tour in the first place! With Dave “Brownsound” Baksh is back in the band (rejoining last year at the APMAs in Cleveland after 9 years away from the band), the familiar face of Tom Thacker (Guitarist/Vocalist of Canadian Legends GOB) along with new drummer Frank Zummo (Previously apart of Street Drum Corps), Sum 41 is back and better than ever. Catch’em out on Warped Tour before they are back to selling out Arenas all over the globe! Their new record 13 Voices drops October 9th on Hopeless Records.
