12 Days of Giveaways – Day 5

While the last thing most people may be thinking about this holiday season is fitness, it’s usually the first thing people think about at the start of a New Year. So for my first, and Addicted’s 5th day of our 12 Days of Giveaways, a lucky reader will have a chance to win a two-week SURFSET membership!

Have you ever surfed? I mean real surfing, in the water, on a board, the kind of thing us Canadians usually only see in movies? Well I have and I can tell you that the 2 hour lesson I took resulted in one of the best workouts I’ve ever had. To this day, I still remember how challenging it was to just stand up on the board. But when I finally hit that milestone and actually SURFED, those few moments felt like one of the greatest accomplishments of my life. That’s the kind of feeling you get after a SURFSET class. The great minds behind this fitness movement have found a way to harness the wobbly power of a surfboard inside of a studio, so that no matter how far from water you may be, you can get that incredible full body workout that surfing provides. A single session can burn anywhere from 500-900 calories in just 45 minutes, by getting away from the traditional static exercise and challenging your body in new ways, using a custom unstable surf board designed to simulate the physical demands of surfing. It’s truly incredible – the day after my class every part of my body ached in that amazing “I had a great workout” way. And the best part? It was so much fun! Once you get out of your head and stop worrying about how silly you look, or how hard it is just to stay on the board, it’s such a freeing experience. I laughed, I worked, I surfed. And you can too!

I got the chance to chat with the lovely ladies that brought the SURFSET concept to Toronto. Here’s what the ladies had to say:

Tell me about SURFSET – what makes it different than your average fitness class?

SURFSET is a surf inspired workout that challenges the body by moving away from traditional static exercise. It’s so different than any other program because it’s all done on an unstable surfboard which mimics the instability of water. That very same instability results in continuous engagement of the core muscles & stabilizers and really works to tone, strengthen and sculpt for a surfer’s long and lean physique.

What brought you to SURFSET, or SURFSET to you?

Excitement for the program initially brought us to SURFSET! We wanted something that was not only tough but also fun, and when we first came across SURFSET we fell in love with the concept and couldn’t wait to bring it here to Toronto.

What has the response been like to this new fitness movement in Toronto?

We are incredibly grateful for all of the positive feedback we’ve received since opening our doors last December. It is at the core of our values to be inspiring, motivating & welcoming. Thankfully our incredible clients and hard-working team allow us to do just that!

What’s your number one piece of advice to someone trying a SURFSET class for the first time?

Have fun with it! Don’t be intimidated by the board, the instability, or the new challenge. Come prepared for a tough workout but don’t forget to smile & laugh through the sweat!

Any last words ladies?

Alex: We brought SURFSET to Toronto because there’s nothing else quite like it! We all have business backgrounds, but our shared passion for fitness brought us together in this venture. The workout is so fun – this is hands down my dream job.

Lua: We LOVE to sweat! We also love to see our clients’ progress, and to see their smiles when they realize how quickly their balance and strength improves just by using our boards (honestly, it’s incredible)!

Sofia: In life and on the board, if you ever fall down it’s okay to admit it, and get right back up.  We’re not expected to get everything right on the first try, however once you do get it, the feeling is amazing!

If you’re not intrigued yet, you will be! Enter our contest below for a chance to try out SURFSET for yourself! (Membership must be redeemed by March 31st, 2015. To redeem the selected winner must contact the studio via phone or email to activate the membership.)
