10 Things to Do in the Northeast

If you find yourself in the northeast area of the United States for any reason, whether you have a business in New York or you’re touring the Newark houses for sale in New Jersey, you’ll be perfectly situated for enjoying a wealth of attractions and activities.

Of course, with 11 states making up this region of the country, it can be hard to know where to begin. It includes Vermont, Rhode Island, New York, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Maryland, Delaware, and Connecticut, so you won’t be able to do it all, but you might want to put some of these top things to do on your list.

Take a Lobster Roll Cruise

Cape Cod is one of the top spots you can visit in New England, especially if you’re here during the warmer months of the year. This area is famous for its lobster, and you can even take a Lobster Roll Cruise from the harbour in Dennis, relaxing on the water as you enjoy the surrounding beauty, a cold beer or refreshing cocktail, while dining on a tasty lobster roll.

Watch for Whales

Cape Cod and the entire coastline stretching north to Maine and beyond is ideal for watching humpback and fin whales. Many excursions leave from Provincetown on the cape’s northern tip, bringing opportunities to enjoy the beach as well as the artsy town’s many attractions.

Explore Boston

New England’s largest city offers lots for history enthusiasts as the birthplace of the American Revolution. Follow the two-and-a-half-mile Freedom Trail from Boston Commons, the camping grounds of the Redcoats, stopping at the Granary Burying Grounds which holds graves of Paul Revere, Ben Franklin’s parents, and many other notable people who once lived here. If you’re a baseball fan, during the season you may be able to catch a Red Sox game at legendary Fenway Park too.

Visit Martha’s Vineyard

For an island escape, head to Martha’s Vineyard, just six miles off the coast of Cape Cod. Oak Bluffs is a great place to explore with its unique, brightly-coloured gingerbread cottages, pretty harbour and beaches for swimming. It’s also home to the Flying Horses Carousel, the country’s oldest, spinning since 1876.

Experience Living History at Old Sturbridge Village

Further inland in Massachusetts, Sturbridge is one of the state’s most historic towns. It’s like stepping into a Norman Rockwell painting. Old Sturbridge Village is the region’s largest outdoor living history museum, providing the chance to step back in time to the 1830s, with costumed guides bringing it to life.

Enjoy Outdoor Adventures in Acadia National Park

One of Maine’s most breathtaking parks, Acadia offers spectacular coastline and soaring mountains, bringing opportunities to paddle in a canoe or kayak, or hit the trails on a bike or on foot. The trek to Cadillac Mount is especially impressive with its jaw-dropping panoramic views from the summit.

New York City

There is so much to do in New York it would probably take a year or more to see and do it all. Just taking a walk through Central Park can make for a great day, and you could spend several days browsing the many works at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, not to mention catching a Broadway show, checking out the bright lights of Times Square and visiting Ellis Island.

Hike the Adirondacks

The Adirondacks region is America’s largest protected wilderness destination, spread over 6-million acres. It’s a hiker’s paradise with more than 100 summits ranging from 1,200 feet to over 5,000 feet high with something for just about every fitness level.

Tour the Newport Mansions

The Newport mansions are America’s version of castles and they’re absolutely stunning inside and out, with The Breakers, which features over 65,000 square feet of indoor space and a perfectly manicured 13-acre lawn overlooking the sea, is the most impressive of all. A National Historic Landmark operated by the Preservation Society of Newport County, it represents the financial and social preeminence of the Vanderbilt family during turn-of-the-century America and it’s available for public tours.

Take in the view from Mount Washington

The White Mountains of New Hampshire offer a year-round playground, with skiing and snowboarding possible at multiple resorts, and during the warmer months, you can ride the Cog Railway to the summit of Mount Washington for a panoramic vista from the highest peak in New England. In autumn, with fiery reds, brilliant oranges, and golden yellows across the landscape, it’s truly mesmerizing.
