Well, it’s finally happened. Summer is over and fall is upon us. While we in Toronto got a little summer extension thanks to an unseasonable heatwave, the chill of autumn is here in earnest, and I’m already starting to suffer withdrawal. I’ll be holding my summer memories close to keep me warm as temperatures drop, and I’ll be reaching for a light and refreshing wine to help inspire those trips down memory lane.
Meet the Flat Roof Manor Pinot Grigio.
The Flat Roof Manor wine range comes from the premier wine-growing regions of South Africa, where summer is a near perpetual phenomenon. The wines are named for the 18th century townhouse that sits on the beautiful Uitkyk Farm in Stellenbosch. The eponymous house was one of just three in that style in the area, and is thought to have been designed by Michel Thibault, the prominent South African architect of the same era.
Legend has it that the house was owned by a wealthy business man, who wanted open the door of fortune to his children. He gifted the keys to the Manor to his daughter on her wedding day, so the newlywed couple could celebrate their newfound happiness, and entertain in splendor, no matter what the occasion. It was an extraordinary and meaningful gift whose legacy and spirit now live on in this beautiful winery, and the wine it produces.
The Flat Roof Manor Pinot Grigio is just as delightful in taste as its origin story is to hear. The wine is pale yellow in color, with a hint of green that brings fresh citrus fruit to mind. That notion of citrus teases nearly all the senses, its aroma blending with scents of light florals and fresh pear on the nose, and refreshing lemon and crisp green apple tantalizing the tongue.
Sipping this wine on one of the last warm days of our extended summer, I was delighted with its lively yet comforting flavor. It’s like sipping on a glass of summer, and at this time of year, that’s something I want to hold onto.
So pick up a bottle of the Flat Roof Manor Pinot Grigio today at your local LCBO and join us in a toast to summer. Those warm sunny days may be behind us, but the bright summery flavors of this wine will comfort us until warmer days return next year.
Cheers! And please drink responsibly.
