My job is to search out the best of the best. Whether it be the latest products to keep your skin looking great, or making the best choices for your finances, I’ve made it my mission to find ways to live a life that is ever evolving and always improving.
Recently, I was introduced to the Meridian Credit Union. Right from the word go it was like nothing I’d experienced before. I knew that I needed to explore further.
With any new experience, knowledge is power. And knowledge is exactly what I sought out.
Let’s start with the basics:
What is a credit union?
A credit union is a Member-owned financial cooperative, generally controlled by the voting of its Members. Credit unions, and Meridian, in particular, provide everyday banking, as well as credit and investment products at competitive rates.
Because credit unions like Meridian are member owned and run, member benefits are top of mind. And membership definitely has its benefits, in the form of lower interest rates, higher investment rates, and other such perks.
Why I switched:
I’ve worked for a major bank (2001-2006), and I’ve endorsed another. Between those experiences, I spent about 15 years feeling like no one was listening to a word I said. I didn’t feel like a person who was being helped from the institutions I placed my money with. Instead, I consistently felt like I was just a number, in a sea of bigger numbers.
At the end of the day, I needed to bank with an institution that would give me advice and not an upsell. I want to be able to call in and get genuine help and guidance, instead of being passed through a queue. Most of all, I wanted to bank where I felt like I had a greater say in what was happening with my money.
When I went to my first appointment with Meridian, I finally felt like I was really being listened to, and was respected as a customer. Shortly after, I had several issues with my then current bank. Instead of dealing with said issues in a proper manner, they actually made the situation much worse. They also did nothing to correct it until I made an official complaint.
It was then that a light went off in my head: why are you banking with a giant corporation that doesn’t care about you at all? Would you go to dinner somewhere that has terrible service? No! So why bank somewhere that has sub-par service? We all need and deserve better.
How easy it can be:
I approached Meridian and said I was ready to partner. At first, I’d open a personal account, then a business account (watch for that coming next). I would start building my financial portfolio and future in a place where I can actually feel not only safe with my decisions, but totally supported as well.
From the moment I walked into the Meridian branch, I was greeted with a smile (literally!) and introduced to Tyler Foti, my financial planner. He took the time to set me up with my member profile so we could open my Plus Package Chequing account. Later, we would add in my business and subsequent accounts.
