Welcome to our new series, Fashion Fix, where we talk to designers and the fashionably fabulous about their fashion addiction! First up is Ross Mayer from Mayer Man.

Mayer Man is the brainchild of designer Ross Mayer.  Mayer has already established himself as an award winning designer here in Canada, previously specializing in women’s wear.  With names like Holt Renfrew, Nordstrom and Saks Fifth Avenue on his resume, Mayer’s reputation precedes him both at home and abroad.  Now he’s back with a curated men’s line that’s sure to shine at this week’s TOM Men’s fashion week.  Learn about Mayer and his fashion addiction below!

How would you describe your personal style?

I am like a chameleon and my looks from one day to the next can vary so much. I think that’s the amazing thing about fashion today is that there are a million trends out there none of which are right or wrong but its all about choosing your look and statement and that’s what makes fashion fun and interesting!

How would you describe your brand?

When I set out to create Mayer Man it was all about offering something special and unique that I felt was missing it the marketplace. We have so much Fast Fashion available to us today….and I love that! I like most people today dress in a way where combining high with low is a modern and realistic way to wear clothing. What I did see that was missing was real quality pieces especially in coats and jackets that were beautifully fabricated and had real interest in style at an attainable price point. The Mayer Man collection’s brand DNA rests in the statement of “Luxury Meets Street,” which is how I feel we want to wear clothing today.

What do you love most about working in fashion?

I love constantly interacting with so many different types of personalities. One day it could be wrapping my head around new digital concepts with my web development team and the next it’s visiting an Italian fabric supplier looking at the latest trends. There is always something new and challenging waiting for me around the corner and I gotta say I live for that good stress!

If you weren’t doing this, what would you be doing?

Absolutely nothing! I don’t even entertain the thought

What do you wish someone had told you when you first started out in the fashion industry?

I wish that someone had told me that everything will not always be perfect. Life and business is about making mistakes and taking that knowledge and moving forward in a positive manner and that’s what builds character and strength. The business of fashion is a roller coaster of a ride and the exciting thing about it is the fact that everyday brings new and different experiences.

If you had any advice for people who aspire to work in fashion, what would it be?

I would say that if you believe in something it’s for a reason so follow your dreams and vision. There are so many brands and competitor’s in today’s crowded marketplace so be unique and original but most importantly be yourself!
