Ecco Bella – Luxurious, Cruelty- and Toxin-free Skincare!

At a time when consumers are beginning to care about the safety and quality of the products they use, it’s become increasingly important to know which ingredients to avoid and which to seek out. It seems that few regulations are in place to control how companies can label their products – is there really a difference between a brand’s regular face wash and the so-called natural, organic version in a calming mint-green bottle? Most often, when you compare the ingredient labels on products in big box stores, you’ll see that the “green” and regular versions contain more or less the same harsh, toxic chemicals. Meanwhile, the alternative of branching out at the health food store can be daunting – the products are often more expensive and the brands not necessarily tried and tested. Addicted is on a mission to explore the very best in truly natural, eco- and animal-friendly cosmetic and beauty products to give you a lay of the land when you’re trying to find the perfect clean and truly green brand to suit your needs!

Ecco Bella was born when its creator, Sally Malanga, couldn’t find a brand to adequately supply her demand for cruelty-free cosmetics. Rather than settle or compromise her ethics, Sally set about creating her own empire of quality products that spare animals the unnecessary torture of lab testing. Her vision quickly grew, expanding into organics, nutraceuticals and multi-faceted products made up of innovative and truly natural ingredients.

In addition to supporting organic, ethical farming through their mandate to not use any pesticide-laden ingredients, Ecco Bella’s line is almost entirely vegan. The only animal-derived ingredient Ecco Bella in some of their formulas is carmine, a very commonly-used food and cosmetic dye made of — gross alert — the dried and crushed bodies or unfertilized eggs of the South American female cochineal beetle. But, settle down, chances are that you ingest it on the regular in various foods and cosmetics that are reddish or pink. Rest assured, however, Ecco Bella on a mission to find an adequate replacement for the stuff to bring you a completely vegan product line.

Aside from being organic, free of animal testing and mostly vegan, Ecco Bella products are also lacking some of the most common – and most dangerous – cosmetic additives. When slathering these luxurious potions on your face, you can be sure you won’t find gluten, lactose, casein, water, alcohol, talc or FD & C dyes.

So, this all sounds great, but do the products actually work?

Ecco Bella had Addicted try out two of their very own favorite products from their line:

The Leave-On Exfoliant Gel & Blemish Remedy, formulated with a 6% Alpha Hydroxy Acid and 2% Salicylic Acid, is used as a leave-on at night after your evening cleansing routine and washed off in the morning, promising to safely dry up blemishes within 48 hours. The benefits? It refines pores, removes dead skin cells, evens out skin tone and also serves as wonderful as a spot treatment for acne – apply sparingly on blemishes to help heal them up quickly. To boot, it’s smells fresh and zesty, which is always a bonus!

The Age Antidote Day Cream is a multi-purpose lotion filled with carotenoids like lutein, lycopene and Astaxanthin, which build up in the skin to create a reflective shield of SPF 15, in addition to also being anti-inflammatory and anti-aging. Packed with CoQ10 and tons of other vitamins, this silky cream glides on smoothly and absorbs quickly, all while smelling faintly of Thanksgiving – so it’s comforting to boot!

I would say it was in preparation for testing out these products, but my pizza face going into this was entirely accidental. Coming off of a good week of partying and cottage time in Muskoka with a bunch of my oldest and dearest friends, I had ingested so much ill-advised food and liquor that my face decided to look like I’m 27 going on puberty. So, really, it was kind of a good thing, because what better time to test anti-acne and anti-aging products than when you look like a haggard and grease-addled pre-teen? Taking a tough canvas, Ecco Bella got my skin clear and glowing in just over a week.

In addition to skin care, Ecco Bella also offers body care, make-up, hair care, parfums and and room mists – an array of products to suit most cosmetic needs!
