Ask your #MCM with Adam from Common Deer

This week we are crushing on Adam Hart-Owens from Common Deer.

Common Deer are a Toronto based band with a beautiful orchestral pop sound. With two sets of siblings in the band family ties run deep, bringing them closer together in their creative process. Fronted by Graham Mclaughlin and Sheila Hart-Owens, Common Deer’s lineup is rounded out by Sheila’s Adam Hart-Owens (cello, guitar, synth), and siblings Liam and Connor Farrell (percussion, synth, samples and  bass respectively. The band started in 2013 and took their time creating and recording their unique sound.  Combining lush strings, modern synths, and traditional guitars, Common Deer makes elevated, intellectual pop music that listeners can’t get enough of.

Common Deer has 2 EPs under their belts now. The latest, simply titled II. The first single, “Wait” is a thought provoking song that hits hard on some necessary topics.  Vocalist Graham McLaughlin describes “WAIT!” as “an awakening to a social climate we didn’t anticipate, a recognition that strength is in numbers and ideas only if they are inspired and connected. “the song urges people to confront ignorance. We really feel like there’s no time to waste.” Check out the video for “Wait” below:

This week we are lucky to be featuring the Hart-Owens siblings in our MCM/WCW series.  First up is brother Adam. Handsome and talented, he brings the classical sound to Common Deer, as well as an interesting perspective on love and romance. Take a read below!

What is your ideal first date?

With a memorable first date, location is secondary to a good conversation. A first date shouldn’t rely on an activity, a good measure of compatibility is whether two people can fill the silence and simply BE in each other’s company.

What is your definition of romance?

Romance is being in love with your best friend. Real romance isn’t manufactured, it’s not something you should feel you need to force.

What’s the first thing you notice about a potential love interest?

Confidence, the way they carry themselves. The way they move across a room, or command attention with a conversation. Kind eyes never hurt.

What’s your instant deal breaker?

It would be impossible for me to be involved with someone who was bigoted in any way. Xenophobic, not extremely LGBTQ positive, etc. Instant deal breaker.

What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever done to get a love interests attention?

In 7th grade I was in love with one of my good friends. She was a year older, and had a very skater aesthetic. I ended up changing my entire appearance (DC shoes, World Industries sweaters), and buying a skateboard (which I never learned how to use) to impress her. Needless to say it didn’t work, she ended up dating my best friend.
