I thought it was considered impolite to ask a woman her age. Unless you’re the bouncer at my favorite dive bar, my date of birth is really no concern of yours. But for some reason I have people asking me my age all the damn time. And what’s worse? These inquisitive types are almost always completely shocked when they hear the answer. Apparently I look “great” for my age. I’m not sure what that even means, but I can tell you one tool in my skincare arsenal that may be responsible for all the shock I’m causing people by being in my thirties: Sunscreen.
There are many things in life that can speed up the aging process. Unhealthy eating habits, not getting enough sleep, poor stress management; these and other things play huge factors in adding years to your face. Excessive drinking, drug use and smoking are vices that can age you as well. But one of the worst culprits in advance aging is sun damage. Sun exposure can cause age spots, premature wrinkling and an overall dehydrated and leathery look to your skin. That’s why I wear a facial sunscreen every single day. Even if you’re just going from your home, to your car or transit, and straight into your office, you’re getting exposed to harmful UVA and UVB rays. Even on the most overcast days, those rays are attacking your face and adding years to your appearance. Including sunscreen in my daily skincare routine has definitely played a part in my looking that few years younger than I am. Finding the right sunscreen is also key to maintaining healthy, sun damage free skin. My ultimate favorite is Cerave’s daytime lotion. With a strong SPF 30 rating, this daily moisturizer gives me just enough moisture on a daily basis, sinks in easily without a greasy feel, helping my skin feel great, while remaining protected all day. No matter what product you choose, just make sure it’s something that feels light and comfortable on your face so that it’s easy to incorporate you into your daily habits.
While youth and beauty definitely aren’t everything, healthy, undamaged skin is always a good addition to anyone’s. And getting in the habit of protecting your skin from the sun is your first step to keeping everyone guessing about how old, or young, you are.
